Please first read this and if you decide to add extra lenth to your case you may do so by ordering below...
Our standard sized case is 5.75" deep from the lip of the holster to the bottom of the case, and 3.5" wide inside. This stock depth accommodates most (90%) of the zoom and kit lenses from Nikon, Canon and others.
Shown is a Nikon 18-200 lens attached to a camera. It's only 5" long as measured in the photo and it fits great in our standard-size 5.75" deep case, which has room to spare for even longer lenses. If your longest lens is no more than 5" long and 3.5" in diameter, the stock case will work great. If you're concerned about the length, or contemplating purchasing a longer lens, please read on, "we have a case for that"...
With our holster design, the barrel of your lens first slides into the holster and your camera's body rests on the lip of the holster itself, where your fingertips normally hold the camera body. This is an important structural "hard point" in the design of your camera's body, and also in your Skytop leather case. (Watch our short video to see this in "motion")
As you can imagine, when your camera is in the case, it's important to have some "air" between your lens cap and the bottom of the case because we don't want the weight of your camera and lens bouncing up and down on the end of your lens when you're in motion!
Thus, the critical distance is the depth of the case from the lip of the holster to the bottom of the inside of the case.
If you want to check, take your longest lens you plan on using in your case and mount it to your camera, don't forget to add a lens cap and filter on the end of your lens (ie- a UV filter). Measure the distance from where your right fingertips grip the body to the end of the lens cap.
If you need more room than the 5.75" our stock case provides, see below. We make a slightly longer version we call the "Buntline"* that has 7" depth, and another longer version for the Canon 70-200 and similar lenses that is 9" deep and 3.9" in diameter (we call it a "Buntline special"). This is a solution for folks that don't want to wander around with their gear "naked". If your long lens has a tripod mount that protrudes from the side of the lens, you'll need to temporarily remove it from the lens to slide it into the case - most folks leave it attached to their tripod.
We normally stock the 7" Buntline and there's about a 2-week wait for the 9" Buntline Special.
* Ned Buntline was a journalist and dime novelist who followed western heroes such as Buffalo Bill Cody and Wyatt Earp. The Buntline Special was a custom Colt revolver with an extra long 10-16" barrel that Buntline commmissioned and presented to Wyatt Earp and some of his Marshalls. Ever since, shooters sporting long barrels have often caused people to remember the Buntline Special. Photographer's long-barreled lenses and affiliation with journalism is a similar and suitable "fit" in our minds. Thanks, Ned.
